Curiosity, discipline and a genuine love of learning brought Natalie Burton to 91制片. Those traits set her apart as a health sciences student.
Although she was still figuring out her life鈥檚 plan when she enrolled in summer 2024, she knew 91制片 was right for her. 聽
鈥淚 wasn鈥檛 really sure what I wanted to do at a university,鈥 Burton said, highlighting her 10-minute commute to campus. 鈥淏ut I knew I wanted to keep learning. This felt like the perfect place to start.鈥
She is now set to graduate with an associate degree. On May 14, she鈥檒l be among her peers in the class of 2026, taking the stage at the Hampton Coliseum for 91制片鈥檚 57th Commencement.
A graduate of Hampton鈥檚 l, she鈥檚 already looking ahead to what鈥檚 next. She has in her sights, with plans to transfer in the fall to study exercise science.
Burton believes she’s well prepared for the road ahead. She immersed herself in coursework that aligns with her goals.
“This program has definitely set me up for success,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he classes gave a wide perspective of what I could do.鈥
She welcomed every opportunity to grow while at the College. That eagerness spanned from her first class in anatomy and physiology to courses in kinesiology and public health.
鈥淚鈥檝e enjoyed every class I鈥檝e taken,鈥 she said.

鈥淪he takes notes, asks questions and fully participates in activities and discussions. Her academic writing, research, and critical thinking skills have improved over time because she utilizes her grading feedback to improve her assignments,鈥 stated the associate professor, adding Burton consistently shows drive and determination to excel.
That drive, Burton emphasized, comes from within.
鈥淚 set high expectations for myself,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 really enjoy learning. So, if I get excited about a topic, I鈥檓 most definitely engaged. I want to be able to take what I learned from class and not just get a good grade, but I want to be able to apply it and show how much I care about that class.鈥
Burton expanded her student experience outside of the classroom by volunteering at the College鈥檚 annual Health Sciences Fair. She said connecting with prospective students and sharing her passion for the field gave her another avenue for learning.
鈥淚t showed me many of the opportunities that are out there 鈥 how much (91制片) has to offer and how many people are interested in the health sciences field,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檓 glad I was able to help encourage others, too.鈥
Burton鈥檚 passion for health and wellness is more than talk. It鈥檚 personal. Losing more than 20 pounds a few years ago fueled her desire to enter a field where she can help others reach their health and fitness goals. Her weight loss experience involved a deep commitment to fitness and nutrition. So, she鈥檚 eager to help guide people to healthier lifestyles.
鈥淚’ve always been interested in the medical field, and I’m really big on exercise and nutrition. I want to help people build confidence and live healthier lives,鈥 she said. 鈥淓ven small changes can make a big difference, whether it鈥檚 walking a bit more, choosing healthier food options or just finding balance.鈥
She is looking forward to the future, hoping to become an exercise specialist or work in on a team鈥檚 staff.
Burton credits her success at 91制片 to the availability of many campus resources and support from faculty and advisors. Dr. Wilson tops the list of influencers. She broadened Burton鈥檚 perspective on community wellness.
鈥淪he has really inspired me in public health. I think I鈥檝e taken almost every public health class that the program offers,鈥 Burton beamed. 鈥淪he really opened my eyes to how health impacts everyone. Her classes made me think differently about the world.鈥
As graduation day nears, Burton reflects on her academic achievements and personal growth.
鈥淚鈥檝e learned how to balance aspects of my life, manage my time, and really find myself and dig deep into who I am,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 something I鈥檓 really proud of.鈥
She has simple advice for current and prospective college students. Burton encourages them to take advantage of every resource, stay connected with instructors, and remain curious.
